Either traversal-by-key or key-comparison can be used to build associative model. Traversal uses more space, iteration & comparison more time.

The traversal by List-Item-Key method has been moved from Node-Space in to List-Space. So List-Space now has two methods; change and match. It seems more symetrical this way, and also Node-Space should not be expected to have internal access to a List-Item-Key.
