- 1981 (oct 06), Egyptian president Anwar Al Sadat was assasinated by Khalid Islambouli of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad for being the first Arab leader to officially visit Israel (for which he and Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin received the nobel piece prize in 1978 for their efforts to end the Arab-Israeli conflict). Over three hundred Islamic radicals were indicted in the trial, including Ayman al-Zawahiri, Omar Abdel-Rahman, and Abd al-Hamid Kishk.

- 1987: Hamas created by Shaikh Ahmed Yassin of the Gaza wing of the Muslim Brotherhood
- 1993: The Taliban is a Sunni Islamist fundamentalist movement started by Naseerullah Babar around 1993-1994 which effectively ruled most of Afghanistan from 1996 until 2001 during which Mohammed Omar was leader.
- 1997: Al-Qaeda and the Taliban have a close alliance, the 055 Brigade and marriage of one of Bin Ladens sons to Omar's daughter.
