I agree that our category hierarchy needs some attention. It's certainly unintentional and I think largely due to the fact that most of the active users here are burdened with trying to make a living. that is certainly the case for me and I often lament this necessity in my own life.

By the way, I am probably the primary fan of SMW here. I've used it quite a bit and fell in love with it. I think there are certain use cases that the semantic datatypes that are complementary to category use cases.

I have also experimented with alternative use cases for categories, which you might find sprinkled throughout pages on this site over the last year or so. I haven't properly documented this but will try to make an introduction here.
