Unity shell will be default desktop in Ubuntu 11
Ubuntu Linux has traditionally used the full GNOME desktop environment and its bundled shell; founder Mark Shuttleworth cited philosophical differences with the GNOME team over the user experience to explain why Ubuntu would move away from it. Unity still uses aspects of GNOME desktop environment and GNOME-based applications will continue to be supported.
