Bread and Circuses

This term describes one of the ancient methods of keeping the lid on societal change via "keeping the population happy" so that people will tolerate corruption and injustice. This method is just as well used today, albeit in a more refined way, as it was in ancient Rome, where the term originates. Some examples are:
- Lotto
- Who wants to be a millionaire?
- Rugby and TV sports
- Valve for enthusiasm and passion
