The practitioner rinses their mouth with approximately one tablespoon of oil (sesame, sunflower, vegetable and coconut oils are the most recommended) for 15–20 minutes on an empty stomach (before eating/drinking) then spits it out.

This process makes oil thoroughly mixed with saliva. As the process continues, the oil gets thinner and white. The oil is put in the mouth, with chin tilted up, and slowly swished, sucked, chomped and pulled through the teeth. The oil changes from yellow and oily consistency to a thick viscous consistency. One must ensure that the oil is spit out before the toxins get re-absorbed by the body. If the oil viscosity starts thinning while swishing, it should be a sign that toxins are getting re-absorbed. A second round of oil pulling may be done with fresh oil for further cleansing. The oral cavity is then thoroughly rinsed and washed with normal tap water and fingers or tooth brush. This procedure is typically performed daily.

This practice is said to draw toxins & destroy natural mouth germs while stimulating the body's eliminatory system and increasing metabolism, thus leading to improved health and the conquering of disease.

According to Dr. Karach, Oil pulling heals “head-aches, bronchitis, tooth pain, thrombosis, eczema, ulcers and diseases of stomach, intestines, heart, blood, kidney, liver, lungs and women’s diseases. It heals diseases of nerves, paralysis, and encephalitis. It prevents the growth of malignant tumors, cuts and heals them. Chronic sleeplessness is cured.”

Personal experience

After hearing about this from a friend, I have started doing this first thing in the morning. When I heard about the technique it seemed pretty weird but on the other hand it is safe and cheap so why not try it and see what happens? If even some of the health benefits claimed by Dr. Karach eventuate, even better! I will update this page to post any subjective improvements or other health effects. The only thing notable so far is a feeling of intense cleanness in the mouth after doing the oil pulling three times.--Milan 13:06, 21 September 2010 (NZST)

Note: According to oilpulling.com, I am not using the recommended oil as I am using cold=pressed virgin olive oil, so I need to get either sesame or sunflower oil for optimal results.--Milan 13:23, 21 September 2010 (NZST)
