Div0 - Division by zero that is - has been causing a bit of drama in the maths community ;-)

going through the Special:Uncategorisedpages i noticed that there are some articles of yours containing private stuff, phone no. etc. i was wandering if they could be put in the phalseid category? --Flower 18:16, 18 Nov 2006 (NZDT)

There's a lot of uncategorised adeft articles too (see special:uncategorizedpages list) --Nad 18:25, 18 Nov 2006 (NZDT)
thanks for the link....i will be cleaning this up...:| --Phalseid 03:20, 19 Nov 2006 (NZDT)

I noticed you reverted document.php on div0 - it would be best to change the links to the format described below rather than stop syncing the article because its best to have the core components stay up to date with bug fixes etc

yeah, i definatley want to keep up to date, do i need to manually go into my div0 articles and change the links/embeds? --Phalseid 03:34, 1 Nov 2006 (NZDT)
I can get Gir to do it if you like, just had to check if you wanted them changed or not first... --Nad 08:39, 1 Nov 2006 (NZDT)

I installed a modified version of OSTicket on my domain so you can check out what i think is the simplest basic workable ticket system can be. I think we need to create a matix of Glue-able software types and options. For example list out a few Ticket options that we are familiar with an know how to glue together.

www.sequoiais.com/ticket/admin.php

user/pwd:peder

a general user would get to it by www.sequoiais.com/ticket/

Aregularjoe 19:02, 28 Oct 2006 (NZDT)

I wouldn't even begin to try to do ticketing in SugarCRM. I think we need to pick the best simplest tools and live the miserable life of multiple tools until we glue them for ourselves.

I spoke with Tony Blandin and have his buy in for 6 hours a week initially. Let's book those 6 hours and go from there. Aregularjoe 18:07, 28 Oct 2006 (NZDT)

I'm only guessing here from the strange nature of the deleted item in the changes - I think you used the + operator where the * should have been used. + is for untransformed embeds similar to the curly-brace mediwiki ones and in that case a single pipe can be used to give a different title to the embeded item or no title at all. The apply * operator is used to transform the embedding item and the pipe is used to separate a list of transforms.

see also talk:document.php
The ones Bender is fixing are the apply (*) ones which have no transforms because its then executing a null article.
I just realised though that apply was probably used like that so the title didn't render.... so he should have replaced them with eg...
+embed-article-with-no-title - notice empty pipe at the end making no title, same as normal wiki link would do
The reason I got bender to fix them all is that the apply operator should work differently for the single article-no-pipes case in that it should execute the single article and apply it to nothing, rather than nothing to it. Currently you have to use Empty Article for that, so
create-something-from-scratch.php
would become,
*create-something-from-scratch.php
but in the current way of using that, it would simply embed the php script, not execute it... --Nad 15:45, 28 Oct 2006 (NZDT)

I noticed you hadn't renamed articles, did the new rename/copy not work? (apart from thar "rename" is still leaving the old name as a redirect)... --Nad 09:07, 27 Oct 2006 (NZDT)

last night it was giving me an error. testing just now worked. fine. --Phalseid 11:42, 27 Oct 2006 (NZDT)
Add any issues with it to talk:copy.php cos there's bound to be some crop up as its used. --Nad 11:48, 27 Oct 2006 (NZDT)

I still think you need to focus right now. Set a priority and focus only on that priority. What ever you do, if it is not creating more stability and making the long term goals every clearer and attainable, put it aside. You will find that you will be putting things aside for short term and maybe others forever. You need to focus. I do to. I am setting my own priorities and with so many potential opportunties to suceed their are equal opportunities to fail. I know I fail most frequently not due to lack of vision but from over commitment lack of focus. This is why I am chosing to begin my "Project" with a PM tool that fits me. It just so happens that it will be based on a CRM tool that keeps me on the wheel of work.

I am laying out all my projects on paper right now to see how to knock one down before the other; gaining focus, experience and hopefully confidence along the way. I am not going to try to swallow any elephants. Remember when you get good at what you are supposed to be doing, Goliath looks just like another big tall Philistine, nothing more.

Hi Peder, Thanks for the positive feedback. I'm just getting the concepts in there for now, although I'm sure a lot of it could be worded better.--Milan 17:35, 22 Oct 2006 (NZDT)

You can't login as root in the new setup so I've set up user phalseid on it with the root passwd temporarily for you to change to your proper password with

passwd phalseid

--Nad 14:59, 16 Oct 2006 (NZDT)

Nope unfortunately the Debianisation is too difficult in the situation that godaddy provide, there's no rescue system to boot in to which means it would be extremely difficult to replace the current system (they do offer the ability to nuke it back to original state though, so a linux guru could probably work out how to debianise it, but none of us have the skills and it would be a lot of time). I don't know which hosting providers are most reliable etc, but VPS Land from our Hosting and domain names list offers Debian. if there's any trouble changing, don't worry too much, we can stick with the redhat. --Nad 21:12, 11 Oct 2006 (NZST)

Rob's got some time to have a look at this Debian Conversion and has some ideas about how to create the needed "rescure partition" equivalent, so maybe hold off on any changes as debianisation may yet be achievable --Nad 21:22, 13 Oct 2006 (NZST)
okeydokey. --Phalseid 22:03, 13 Oct 2006 (NZST)

I don't have the master passwd to generate the wikiexpert admin passwd. if they have an option to boot into a rescue mode that gives access to the main files we're set, otherwise probably too dificult and we'll stick with redhat. --Nad 11:51, 11 Oct 2006 (NZST)

Do we have an URL/access details for re-imaging the wikiexpert server if we stuff it up so it can't boot? (which could have already happened... I'm not sure I don't want to risk a reboot to see!) --Nad 22:06, 10 Oct 2006 (NZST)

The good news is though that I know for sure that it can be done, the wikiexpert server is using Virtuozzo and other people in our exact situation have replaced their supplied OS with Debian like we want to do --Nad 22:09, 10 Oct 2006 (NZST)

Those images problems causing errors should be ok now, I hadn't installed ImageMagick on the new server, done now --Nad 23:00, 9 Oct 2006 (NZST)

Ok, well I'm checking out if I can do this Debian install thing, I'm not sure if I can do it because (1) my Linux skillz aren't too shit hot, and (2) the instructions assume you can create a new partition for it, but we're on a virtual-fs which can't be repartitioned - but I'm working on it now anyway, so I can let you know soon.

I'm pretty sure it can be done, but I don't get hoe to do it, all the existing instructions I can find require creating new partitions to put the debian into and doesn't work if you just use normal directories. Maybe your tech freind would know how to do it, here's the instructions I've found...

The only part which is a problem is this partition stuff, I'm sure a proper linux guru would know how to set up mount points containing the right stuff without needing to create partitions. I've already installed /usr/sbin/debootstrap which is the first step. --Nad 22:49, 9 Oct 2006 (NZST)

Also, the server clock was 12hr wrong, so all these changes are not at the top of the list so they're hard to see... --Nad 21:29, 9 Oct 2006 (NZST)

Also, don't feel bad about all this, I was feeling bad too that I couldn't just chip in for some of the cost, but I just live day to day and have no spare money :-/

Hi Peder, thanks for the positive feedback on my user page, yes lets do some work on New Home and Manifesto today. I will throw in some things and then you see how that sits with you, and we should be able to come up with something quite smooth. I feel that those two workspaces are quite closely related.--Milan 21:05, 5 Oct 2006 (NZST)

You should have told me you were having difficulty covering the server, I'd rather move OD back onto a local server than have it giving you even minor stress. Its been really cool having the high bandwidth and storage while its lasted so thanks a heaps for that! but its a luxury, not a necessity and dev will keep rolling on without it :-) Don't worry about raising the unpaid bill, I'll move operations back to a local server today. --Nad 20:56, 5 Oct 2006 (NZST)

More Humane Interfaces

Peder, Yes I meant humane and not human. Sometimes I feel tortured by software designs.

I will put a page together on my views of interface design.

http://www.panopticon.com/flashdemo/..
This was a good tickler to start the discussion. They made one point but shot themselves in the foot on another.
What good is it if the user needs to see the smallest numbers? They don't have enough room to display. Gee, wouldn't the ability to sort the columns with single click answer the same question. Plus it you were looking for the sum $$$ of the top five over budget departments, if they were using a spreadshet, they could put a box around the sorted list and see the number appear in the status bar. One thing I think of is that one display needs to answer sever questions, not just one. Accounting people wet their pants once they learn to use the pivot table functions in Excel(which are coming up to speed in OpenOffice).

There almost needs to be a chart showing the task/user/foofoo factor for interface design

So where should I put topics that are 'My Perspective On.....'

Andrew, enjoyed our chat.
1) you and i need to get on the same page/system for dialogue/clients (email doesn't cut it)
2) for more "decetralization" get gmail and find out what it will do for your "structured" world view (forward all your email to it and ditch outlook forever)
3) call erich 482-5916 re Wendy's and the radial server. realize he has a lot of projects he is doing for me right now, and i need them done before he fills up his plate any more.
4) BONUS! ONLY ON WIKIEXPERT! If you read this, you have a meeting scheduled with SmartCarpetCare.com on Sep 27 at 2:30 pm] to go over our proposal.

Sorry about that deletion, but advertising a giant bus is just too out of kilter with what the project is about - not just that its advertising, but that the project is trying to help soften the enormous peak-oil disaster that's right round the corner... Check out the project documentaries if you haven't already... --Nad 09:40, 8 Aug 2006 (NZST)

this brings up an interesting point or two....

1) what if (potential) clients (your/mine/ours) contribute to something that is considered harmful (by whom)? this limo company is on my "potential client" list. anyone i interact with is a potential "partner". concise question: who decides? for how long? a business is not going to want to park business processes on a structure that is at the whims of the "oligarchs" (pardon my dig! :) )

2) Not sure i want to defend it, i get your point, but when you have little kids like i do, they like "big things" be they firetrucks, wikipedia:Busses, or dinosaurs. for what it is worth, this bus (public transportation) takes the place of 2 buses in mass transit for the well-to-do from fort collins to denver. supposedly, this is better for the environment (i question that value as i have friends on the local transportation board, i know what the busses cost, and the CBA ratio is pretty dismal IMHO. at least fort collins uses "clean" fuel (natural gas, "bio" desel (blend) etc.)) 3) in personal commentary this was on my "things to do for fun" list.....we are going to look at it, i can't afford to ride the thing! :) i believe this was in a page tagged Category:Phalseid/Personal

4) it is in my nature (for better or worse) to antagonize. I have found it a productive (if not selfish) way to learn by touch where boundries are.

--Phalseid 16:09, 7 Aug 2006 (NZST)

No stress or judgement intended, but I do confess to being an oligarch of my own domain and using such power whenever I feel like it (but I think this is the first time I've moderated something tho... :-) --Nad 11:37, 8 Aug 2006 (NZST)
As far as the project/philosophy overall goes, it's no biggie - the software is opensource and freely useable/changeable for whatever, but people can still create their own areas with their own rules and opinions. So soon we'll migrate OD to the peer system just like you could migrate Div0, and we'd both say and not say whatever we want on those domains even though they'd both be using the peer and therefore both be contributing to the project. --Nad 11:43, 8 Aug 2006 (NZST)
well, its appopro that i should be the first one mod'd...and proud of it. and thanks for reminding me of the big picture....
) --Phalseid 17:50, 7 Aug 2006 (NZST)

Hi Peder, I hadn't heard of Foldera. I like the look of it though. I will have a wee browse to see what interface ideas we might be able to borgify for the Peer ;-)--Milan 09:12, 4 Aug 2006 (NZST)

Nice translation of the tagline of Fight Club there :-) I really liked that movie too, although it was a little violent and nihilistic too receive my full endorsement. I like the proposed p2p organisational structures in it though. More on the content development stuff will follow on the weekend, when my client is not concerned about what I do on OD. In other words, I'm getting paid to do the client's bidding, not develop content on OD. Now, to get paid to manage content on OD, that would be nice...--Milan 11:32, 30 Jun 2006 (NZST)

My programmer has my disaster recover backups deposited nightly on wikiexpert.com now (as .gz files) just FYI for performance hits, etc. let me know if you need me to reschedule anything. also, any reason why ssh would not connect intermitantly? --Phalseid 06:57, 28 Jun 2006 (NZST)

I've never had any trouble logging in and no bandwidth issues with that server ever since it started (except that 2hr the other day), so maybe it was at your end that the ssh wasn't working. I noticed you were having some auth diffculty - once you're logged in either do sudo command or just su then type in the root passwd when it asks (the original chompsky one you made up). I don't know what the wikiexpert user account on there is, but I think its probably redundant, all you need is your own user-login and the root-passwd to do su with. --Nad 10:41, 29 Jun 2006 (NZST)
i got some more info from Erich..he has no trouble pinging and port 22 seems fine. However, execpt for his one SSH connection he has had open for quite some time now, he cannot create another ssh session. Are you able to connect via SSH? i suggested he try with another connection thru our university. Let me know if you can't ssh in. he will explore the logs to figure this out. This might be a good time to ask...what needs to happen to this virtual server in the future? aka > migration day. --Phalseid 16:46, 28 Jun 2006 (NZST)
I can get in fine - what account is he using to log in with? you can't log in as root - you must log in with your use account and then su to root. --Nad 10:50, 29 Jun 2006 (NZST)
I see a phalseid ssh session has been active for some time - I guess that's his session is it - so if he can't get in on that again, there must be a network problem at your end to resolve. --Nad 10:52, 29 Jun 2006 (NZST)

Hi Peder, I've just unprotected collab portal again, sorry about the comment, it doesn't sound very nice in retrospect. I don't know how to give sysop perms unfortunately.--Milan 09:04, 22 Jun 2006 (NZST)

Regarding the address of the collab portal, I was thinking just a link to under the "navigation" menu would do it. However, I'm reluctant to "make it all official" at the moment because it is still "work-in-progress" and will probably remain so for a few more weeks. are you able to edit that now?--Milan 12:30, 21 Jun 2006 (NZST)

Hi Peder, I assumed you had those perms since you are admin. You will need to ask Nad about that and the other stuff. Sorry I couldn't helkp you there, --Milan 11:44, 21 Jun 2006 (NZST)

I've set you up on wikiexpert, passwd is 1234, best to log in now and change to your proper passwd, root passwd is same as you first made it. --Nad 12:10, 21 Jun 2006 (NZST)

I don't think the wiki is all that useful as a file repository, if you want files local on the server use SCP --Nad 10:13, 18 Jun 2006 (NZST)

I spose if they're just small its alright - big things should wait for later nodal conversion --Nad 10:16, 18 Jun 2006 (NZST)

There's no problem putting the admins in the adeft group from sys, because then those users will be grouped properly in the adeft group (except that feature is broken as you probably noticed). But there's no use in putting a readable/writable perms tag with admin in it since the read/write aren't even checked if the user is admin.

Also, removing unused xml-elements isn't just about being tidy, its that they still have an effect - eg. an empty language element will force the article to wiki-text even if its supposed to be php or something.

--Nad 12:33, 7 Jun 2006 (NZST)
ah ha! says peder, as he discovers why his php pages sometimes render as text and he can't figure it out --19:34, 6 Jun 2006 (NZST)

I think you have raised some very important points regarding development and they need to be addressed. It's kinda hard to answer your questions right now (I know, it shouldn't be), so we all need to make thing a lot clearer regarding development. We need to get organised! It's happening right now, and through the wiki you will be a part of it.--Milan 11:02, 8 Apr 2006 (NZST)

That's a cool looking linking thingy! but what is that place it links to? some kind of associative connection-creator or something?

Nad 08:43, 23 Mar 2006 (NZST)

(-: Hi there!

World 11:30, 11 Mar 2006 (NZDT)

Not many people are using XmlWiki as it has only recently been set up, and has come about as a side-effect of development on our main project. You can use it to make forms/templates etc (example form), but you'll have to be more specific as to what you're wanting to do for me to be of any help. We use the environment for developing (and executing) PHP and Perl code, but we can only offer that functionality to developers of the project due to the obvious security issues involved. If you set up your own MediaWiki I can add the XmlWiki environment to it if you like.
