New MediaWiki code-bases added to our wikia[edit]

I've added code bases in our /var/www directory for versions 1.10.3, 1.11.1 and 1.12alpha, and have run math/make in each and linked each ones extensions dir to /var/www/extensions. None of our wikis are using those codebases yet though and still need to generate a default LocalSettings.php and empty database for the 1.12 as its a new major version.

The first wiki we'll upgrade to 1.12 is so we can begin adjusting it to integrate directly in to the code-base rather then working as an extension.

Difficult bug found and resolved[edit]

A bug cropped up today which was very difficult to track down so I thought I better document what happened in case it crops up again somewhere. The problem initially started after extensions on one of the server running some MediaWikis were updated. Afterwards a number of drop-down lists in forms around a few of the sites had stopped showing their selected state (the "selected" attribute was not being added to any of the "option" elements).

I picked one list it was happening to and started tracking the problem down. First I found that the option list was being generated by Template:FormSelectFromCategory which takes two parameters, the first the name of a category and the second an optional parameter which is the current value if any exists. This template returns the items in the passed category as an HTML option list with one of them selected if it matches the second parameter.

Outputting the values being passed to this template showed that for some reason the second parameter was empty even though it was being passed an expression which was the value of a variable that had been set with the Variables extension. I found that the variable was being cleared if there was a DPL query between its definition and subsequent recall.

Looking in the code of the variables extension I found that it clears all its defined variables in the ParserClearState hook. Commenting this out fixed the problem which means that the DPL extension must clear the parser state for some reason.

Both extensions may have a good reason for doing what they're doing, but for now I'll have to leave the line commented out and let the authors know that the problem is happening.

Freshbooks + Basecamp = time tracking/billing + project management[edit]

FreshBooks is pleased to announce the release of its integration with the 37signals Basecamp project management tool. It's available now in your account, you can access it from the import/export link off of your Home tab.

With the integration with 37signals' Basecamp project management tool, you can now:

Create invoices for your Basecamp projects

After you manage your projects in Basecamp by working on To-Do lists and tracking your time, you can now bill your clients for those projects in FreshBooks. After enabling your Basecamp account you can bill your clients for work you manage in Basecamp. To do this, just click 'New invoice' inside your FreshBooks account and follow the link to generate an invoice from Basecamp.

Import your Basecamp information and invoice your time

If you want to use your FreshBooks account to do your timesheets on Basecamp projects, you can import your Basecamp projects, To-Do lists and people to start logging time for projects in FreshBooks. You can then generate an invoice for your logged time when you need to bill your clients for these projects.

Killer query problem[edit]

We kept getting MySQL running at 100% CPU, making the site inaccessible for many minutes at a time! Whenever this occurred, logging in to MySQL and doing a show processlist command would reveal that a heavy DPL query was running. We had found previously (on 4 January 2008) that some kinds of DPL queries were extremely CPU intensive, but had removed them all from the site.

By checking the activity log for requests made by the same IP as that relating to the heavy query in the MySQL process list, I discovered that the problem was always being caused by link-crawler robots scanning through historical articles, so as a temporary solution I've disabled diff and history functions for anonymous users. The specific DPL queries that have been causing the trouble are those that include the createdby parameter.

Excellent interview with Foster Gamble[edit]

Foster Gamble on Juicy Living Tour.jpg
Lilou Mace interviews Foster Gamble from the Thrive Movement covering many important topics such as democracy, liberty, free energy and more.

Some really difficult topics are raised such as the problem of democracy violating the golden rule and whether voting is of any use in such a corrupt system.

He responds to criticisms regarding his talking about so-called conspiracies of "evil agendas" taking over by saying that although consciousness and awareness are extremely important, they must be balanced by a clear understanding of reality obtained through rigorous objective research.

Move completed[edit]

The situation seems to be stable, it hasn't gone very smoothly and we've suffered some painful informational losses from the last day's edits, but we've done ok overall considering that the initial problem was a completely spontaneous and irrecoverable loss of all the data on the server. And what doesn't kill us only makes us stronger - so the new installation is a much more efficient and portable way of maintaining many wiki's of different versions along with the backup and distribution of their data. And soon we'll have an in-wiki interface to creating, removing and adjusting configuration on them all.

Deja Vu: New VPS up and running[edit]

Well we're back up and running yet again. Unfortunately the VPS Land experience was very bad! first they took 50 hours to set up our server, and then after less than a day it had crashed and was not accessible or rebootable. They took more than ten hours to respond to tell me that we needed to upgrade to more RAM.

We're now on VPS Link which I've set up and used before for a client and found it to be very good. I've had to remove our memcached server since it uses too much RAM (which is probably what helped to totally crash the last VPS).

  • See OD/VPS for details about the VPS and RAM/Swap-space issues.

Huge Worldwide Cyber Bank Raid Ongoing[edit]

HighRollerTimeline.png
Sky News has just reported that a huge worldwide cyber bank raid is ongoing - €60 million have been confirmed stolen through 1 server, and a total of €2 billion is estimated to have been stolen through an additional 59 servers! This attack has been ongoing since the beginning of the year, but has possibly gone unreported to avoid bank-runs.

The original version of the fraudulent system is a variant of the Zeus/SpyEye trojans which have been circulating for a year or so phishing for information from the many customers who are silly enough to be using the Microsoft Windows operating system and then logging in to their bank accounts and transferring their money out.

This new system however is far more sophisticated and can now operate in many cases from it's own servers rather than from compromised client computers. I think this huge fraud could well be used (and even funded) by the elite to avoid responsibility for the financial collapse. They can now blame this virus for the collapse saying they were making good progress getting things back on track - when in reality the entire system is being propped up by derivatives and is in the process of total and unavoidable collapse.

Sons of Liberty Academy[edit]

SonsOfLiberty.jpg

The Sons of Liberty Academy is a really complete and well presented research project by truth-seeker Chris Duane. He's put together an extremely comprehensive and well organised package of material which is in the form of ten video modules, each with an associated optional set of supplementary material for deeper research into the topics covered.

The Sons of Liberty Academy is invaluable material for anyone interested in getting a deep and clear knowledge of what's really behind all this war, poverty and financial meltdown, and what the real solutions are. It's invaluable not only for newcomers to these concepts so they can avoid thousands of frustrating hours wading through confusion and disinformation, but also a great reference and referral resource to have at hand for those of us who have been studying these concepts for many years.

SupportSonsOfLibertyAcademy.png
Membership to access the material has recently been made free of charge since it's such important knowledge. However, for those who do have some funds available to support a good cause, I think Sons of Liberty Academy is one of the best causes out there in the current times.

Free energy technology to be made widely available![edit]

Many people have claimed to have a free energy device in operation before, however this claim is different in that it is backed by a high-profile PR campaign and scientific validation process. Many people are following the Steorn website to see whether Steorn have really achieved this long-hoped-for breakthrough that would significantly alter the way we do almost anything. Furthermore, they are promising to share this technology widely once validated.

Press release

Dublin, 11th January 2007: Steorn, the Irish technology development company, has today announced that its free energy technology will be made widely available to the development community immediately after the independent scientific validation process that is currently underway.

Under the terms of a modified general purpose licence and for a nominal fee, Steorn's intellectual property will be made available concurrently to all interested parties, from individual enthusiasts to larger research organisations. Steorn is taking this bold move to accelerate the deployment and acceptance of its technology for both humanitarian and commercial products. More...
