  • Installed Ubuntu 8.04 on a WD 20GB HDD, Athlon XP2100, 1.0GB RAM
  • Installing OD server package. Have only needed the UI to date. Needs restart.
  • Wanted to install Flash so let it.
  • Installing 134MB of updates
  • Installing NVIDIA accelerated driver resulted in 320 pixel screen, reverted.
  • Installed OD workstation package


  • Installed Apache Mysql Php
  • Installed Geany
  • Installed Mediawiki
  • Logging in as root because of annoying file save restrict permissions

(Re)install Ubuntu Home Server

  1. Boot PC from an Ubuntu CD (8.04), install. Manual partition, ext3, no swap partition.
  2. sudo passwd root
  3. Install restricted drivers (Nvidia)
  4. Install swapfile deb from http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/admin/dphys-swapfile.
  5. Copy any saved debs to /var/cache/apt/archives
  6. Install a new workstation (OD)
  7. Ubuntu Post Install (OD)
  8. IE6 works IE7 not attempted at this stage
  9. Install Skype
  10. Install a new server (OD)
  11. Extract a wiki backup into /var
  12. Change symlinks in /domains and /wikis
  13. Edit localsettings
  14. Edit wikia.php
  15. Setup up symlink from localhost to new mediawiki dir and test
  16. Install a MediaWiki code-base (OD). Localhost now reports: MediaWiki 1.14.0 Please set up the wiki first.
  17. Install a new wiki (OD)
  18. Configure Mailserver (OD). Spamassassin also. Tested and works.
  19. Configure AdminSettings.php
