If you want to get into mining, you can join one of the bitcoin pool cooperatives such as: http://www.btcguild.com/ to share computing resources with other collaborators (a la SETI@Home)

I am not sure how or whether it's possible to use the official Bitcoin client for btcguild.

I'm actually going to try setting up a small rig in my closet ;-) I think you could get at least a few coins per month with a cheap PC as long as it has a PCIexpress slot (should be able to find one of them somewhere between $0 and $150) and a reasonable GPU such as an ATI Radeon HD5830 which you can pick up for $200. You can then install LinuxCoin on it from an ISO and away you go! --nad 15:28, 21 June 2011 (PDT)

Having read about 'profitability' in terms of energy cost, I know the perfect place to set up a mining operation. It's the vila of Tucurui Brazil, where I stayed for 6 months. Electricity is free to all residents of the hydroelectric plant community :)
