New MediaWikiLite Extension[edit]

The idea of MediaWikiLite is to allow the current MediaWiki codebase to run as a standalone server without requiring a database server or web-server. This forms the foundation for a number of alternative uses for the MediaWiki software in environments where the current LAMP architecture is too resource intensive.

  • Personal wiki: Personal desktop wiki's are becoming very popular, but they do not use the MediaWiki parser, and making a fork of the parser code defeats the purpose.
  • Embedded devices such as PDA's, iPod's and iPhone's can only run lite applications effectively and getting MediaWiki onto them would be very useful, especially if it's designed to synchronise with a web-based mirror when an internet connection is available.
  • PeerPedia: A lite version of MediaWiki is required to make it a possible candidate for a client side wiki interface to a P2P article space.

The extension is now in beta state and can be viewed and tested at www.mediawikilite.org. Installation instructions, links to download and general discussion can be done at mediawiki.org in the Extension:MediaWikiLite article.

Wikipedia Gets $890K to make editing easier![edit]

Concerned that many would-be contributors to Wikipedia are being scared away, the Wikimedia foundation that runs the online encyclopedia is getting a US$890,000 grant to try to make the editing process more user-friendly.

Anyone can contribute to Wikipedia, but clicking on the "edit" button brings up a jumble of coding mixed with plain English paragraphs.

There are buttons on the top of the page that eliminate any need for users to write their own code, but the Wikimedia Foundation has acknowledged for several years that the unfamiliar feel of the editing process probably turns off people who could otherwise make valuable contributions.

Bitcoin hit $100 today!!![edit]

BTC at $100.jpg

This is a screenshot from the Bitcoinity chart site. The picture in the background is the Joker from the latest Batman movie and was changed from the default black background on the site for April fools day. When the price went over $100, money poured down the page and some people dressed as pink fluffy pigs danced at the top - sorry I missed that in my screenshot :-(

Server Resource Concerns[edit]

The responsiveness of our the sites on our VPS has been steadily declining over the past few months even though our resource usage has remained steady. I've notified our host (VPSLink) who have been able to temporarily fix the problems. After the responsiveness dropped again over the Christmas period I notified them again and they've moved us onto a new physical server with less clients on it. This should alleviate the problem for a while, but I fear it's a trend that stems from the fact that VPSlink don't offer a guarantee of maximum clients per physical server, or minimum available MHz of CPU capacity. I'm currently researching other VPS hosts who do offer guarantees on those aspects which should give a more consistent level of performance.

Wiklets Update[edit]

The Wiklets extension has been brought up to a functional level today. It uses Mat Kruse's JavascriptToolbox, but currently uses iFrames which is not ideal, when Matt's new popup-div component is ready Wiklets extension will use div's rather than iFrames. See a working example of wiklets in the Wiklet example article.

Richard Stallman talks about free software at the University of Auckland[edit]

Richard Stallman.jpg
Richard Stallman, (pseudonym "rms") is a software freedom activist, hacker (programmer) and software developer. In September 1983, he launched the GNU Project to create a free Unix-like operating system, and has been the project's lead architect and organiser. With the launch of the GNU Project, he started the free software movement and, in October 1985, set up the Free Software Foundation.

He pioneered the concept of copyleft and is the main author of several copyleft licenses including the GNU General Public License (GPL), the most widely used free software license. He wrote the original Emacs editor, the GNU Compiler Collection, and the GNU Debugger.

He's currently visiting New Zealand and is doing a series of lectures. Today the Organic Design team went to the University of Auckland to attend his lecture on free software and digital restrictions management. He explained that the copyright system we have in place today was designed in a time when only publishing companies could afford to print material and that it was never intended to impede the ability for individuals to share information amongst themselves. Further than this he states that to deliberately impede a society's ability to share information and knowledge is immoral and should not be tolerated by the people.

Moving our project management to Drupal[edit]

Storm-task.png
We've been using our own custom-made wiki organisation system to manage our own internal projects for a few years now. It's been very useful for us to define what our needs are in terms of a CMS-based project management tool, but we now need to use something that's more complete and requires less development from our own team so we can focus on the Platform specification and Software architecture documents. Jack has been experimenting with a Drupal system called "Storm" which looks very promising. A screenshot of the task-creation process in Storm is shown to the right. It looks very nice and familiar thanks to Jack porting our MediaWiki skin over to Drupal 6 and 7 :-)
